This page here gives a good breakdown of crime over all US States for 1998, and this page from the same site does the same thing for various US Cities using 1997 data, with the crime categories broken down in greater detail. The FBI site has more detailed data, in Adobe Acrobat pdf format, with detailed reports up to 2000.

The US Bureau of Justice Statistics site has more data on it, in html format, with lots of graphs and things. Comparisons of crime rates for any two US districts can be done here. There's enough material here to keep you going for hours...
